Satin black sits between gloss black, which shines like new paint, and matte black, which is completely flat. It keeps a soft sheen that still shows the body lines. Black is also one of the longest-lasting wrap colours. Upload a photo of your car and compare the three blacks side by side.
Three different films, not three names for the same one.
A low, soft sheen. Reflections are blurred but the body lines still show. Fingerprints blend in better than on gloss, but oils and dust still show.
Looks like fresh black paint, with sharp reflections. It shows fingerprints, dust and water spots the most, and it is the easiest to wash.
Flat, with no mirror reflections. It looks the most aggressive, but oily marks show and it needs matte-safe products.
Dead matte is even flatter than matte. Metallic black adds fine sparkle in the sun. Carbon fibre adds a woven texture and is often used on roofs, hoods and mirrors.
Shops do not agree. Some say satin hides small marks better because it scatters light. Others say gloss film resists marking a little better and can be polished in some cases. Ask your installer which they see hold up better on cars like yours.
Care notes from 3M, Avery Dennison and wrap shop guides.
Do not use wax, polish or gloss enhancers on satin or matte film unless the maker approves the product. They can leave shiny patches. Avery notes matte finishes can shift in colour and gloss with cleaners, wax and polish.
Wash by hand with a soft microfibre mitt. Brush car washes can scratch the film.
3M says to wait 72 hours after install before the first wash.
3M suggests cleaning fingerprints on matte film with a mix of 70% isopropyl alcohol and 30% water.
Bird droppings, tree sap and bugs can mark satin and matte film faster, so clean them off soon.
Examples from maker ranges: 3M 2080 Gloss Black G12, Satin Black S12, Matte Black M12, Dead Matte Black DM12 and Shadow Black SB12; Avery Dennison SW900 Gloss Black 190-O, Satin Black 197-O, Matte Black 180-O and Obsidian Black.
Black names do not carry across brands: one maker's satin black can look a little different from another's.
Black and white are the longest-rated colours on the Avery Dennison SW900 data sheet: up to 12 years on vertical surfaces and 3 on horizontal ones such as the hood and roof (revision dated 03/10/26). Black gets hot in strong sun, and heat is hard on film, so shade and care help.
A picture helps you choose a direction. These checks help you choose the actual film.
Wrap film looks different in sun, shade and under shop lights, and a small swatch looks different from a whole car. Ask the installer to hold a sample on your paint outside.
A pink or a grey from one brand is not the same colour as one with a similar name from another. Always give the installer the brand, the film line and the colour name together.
Cast films such as 3M 2080 and Avery Dennison SW900 are made to stretch over curves. Ask which line the shop uses and how long they expect it to last on your car.
Wrap goes over sound factory paint. Chips, clear coat peeling and old repaints can show through or lift when the film comes off.
Some states and countries ask you to report a colour change to the vehicle registry, and some limit mirror-like reflective finishes. Ask your installer or the local vehicle agency.
Save your before and after picture and take it to two or three local wrap shops. Tell each one the film brand, line and colour you want, for example "3M 2080 Satin Black" or "Avery Dennison SW900 Gloss Dark Green".
Ask each shop to show you a sample of satin, gloss and matte black on your car, whether door jambs are included, and what the warranty covers. A picture of your own car makes it easy for them to see what you mean.
The tool draws an approximation of each colour and finish from a description. It is not the film maker's swatch, and screens show colour differently.
It is a preview, not a quote. It does not measure the car, check the paint or give prices.
Very shiny finishes such as chrome are hard to show: the reflections in the picture are invented and will look different on your street.

It hides fingerprints better than gloss, but oils and dust still show. Hand wash it and avoid wax, polish and brush car washes.
Opinions differ. Some shops say satin hides small marks better, others that gloss resists them a little better. Neither finish hides every scratch.
Avery Dennison rates SW900 black up to 12 years on vertical surfaces and 3 on horizontal ones. Real life depends on sun and care.
Roughly $3,000 to $4,500 for a sedan in the US. Matte adds about $200 to $400. Try our car wrap cost calculator.
